Located in Carabanchel, Madrid, a district historically associated with workshops and small-scale production, Amistad transforms a former carpentry workshop into a home through a strategy of minimal transformation. Retaining the building’s existing structure, proportions and industrial character, the project works with what is already there, introducing only the interventions necessary to accommodate domestic life.
The ground floor preserves the original spatial continuity, organising living, dining and kitchen spaces in a linear sequence from the street to the interior courtyard. A single structural operation – the insertion of a staircase through a localised opening in the slab – connects the two levels while preserving the building’s structural logic.
Defined by timber elements, birch plywood panels and a restrained palette of materials, the project creates a calm and contemporary domestic environment where the memory of the former workshop remains present and transformation is achieved through precision rather than replacement.
